CareerSource Pinellas aims to help every job-seeker meet his or her needs. After hard work from our dedicated counselors and staff members, we are able to help Pinellas County residents meet their goals and better themselves. Here are some of their stories:
Parents, students, workers: Keith and Nicole Taylor
Keith and Nicole Taylor, St. Petersburg College nursing students, are diligently
working to provide the best life possible for their family. The couple has 3 young children plus part-time jobs and school. Like an expert machine, they have truly managed their family life as a team, juggling childcare, study time, and work, in focused harmony.
Yet despite their hard work, everyone, even the Taylors, needs assistance from time to time. CareerSource Pinellas provided childcare referrals to help alleviate scheduling conflicts. With childcare needs met, Keith and Nicole were able to receive transportation assistance that aided in the family’s busy scheduling. Lastly, to assist in the couple’s job search, CareerSource staff made referrals for the Taylors based off their expressed interests and goals.
Once Keith had completed his schooling, career counselors were able to help
him find full-time employment as a Patient Care Tech with Baycare at Morton
Plant Mease Hospital. Nicole has maintained her employment with the YMCA
as she continues throughout her nursing program. The chance to play even a tiny role in the success of such a remarkable family is truly why we here at CareerSource Pinellas love to do!
Lam Hau, successful solderer.
Lam Hua always had dreams of attending college after his high school graduation. Those dreams were hindered due to financial limitations. Still wanting to better himself, Lam learned about CareerSource Pinellas’ program for Soldering & Cabling while attending Pinellas Park High School. He reached out to CareerSource staff and was enrolled into the program at The Science Center of Pinellas. During the class training, Lam received gas cards which helped alleviate financial stress and ensured he had a way to get to class. Additionally, he received resume assistance and mock interview training to help get him ready for employers.
Shortly after completing the program and earning certifications, Lam gained employment at Onicon Incorporated in Largo, FL. In his first month on the job, he was promoted to Programmer/Calibrating Technician due to the skills, techniques and training that he learned through program. Lam is very appreciative for what CareerSource Pinellas has done for him and is excited that he can now have a career in a field that he enjoys.
Family man Raul Silva assumes many different roles throughout his day. As a hardworking New York native, husband, father and grandfather, being unemployed wasn’t a role he had planned to obtain. After an unexpected lay off from his employer of 3 years, Silva was feeling absolutely hopeless.
At the time, Silva held a Class-B driver’s license; however, the demand for Class-A Commercial drivers was much higher. Silva decided that advancing his logistics and transportation knowledge would lead to higher-paying job opportunities. Through the WIOA program, Silva was able to receive tuition assistance to train for his Class-A Commercial Driver’s license through Career Tech. To ensure successful completion of his training, Silva was provided with supportive services, such as transportation and other accompanying needs, to help eliminate financial obstacles. Silva’s career counselor even made regular check-in calls to Silva for encouragement throughout the process!
As predicted, Silva worked hard and was able to obtain his Class-A driving credentials. Within 2 months of completing his training, Silva was offered a high-wage job driving a tractor trailer truck locally. Silva accepted, and has truly thrived in his new position, already being put up for promotion due to his incredible work ethic.
“WIOA provided me the opportunity of a lifetime…When I was unsure how to pay for training, they helped and now I am back to work and able to provide for my family.”
From Homeless to Champion: Ashan Spleen
Ashan Spleen is a veteran who dreams of working as an aircraft technician. He made his first steps towards this career by relocating to Florida from New York to attend the National Aviation Academy. While working towards his aircraft mechanic certification, Ashan found himself nearly homeless and in need of tuition assistance. During an outreach event hosted at the National Aviation Academy, students such as Ashan were able to connect with CareerSource Pinellas and learn about the various programs and services offered by the organization.
CareerSource Pinellas staff diligently worked with Ashan to provide him with two program years’ worth of tuition so that he could complete his education. He was also enrolled into the voluntary SNAP program and received transportation reimbursements for his training commute.
Since completing his training in 2015, Ashan had the wonderful opportunity to work on several contract roles with aircraft companies, including Lockheed Martin. In August 2016, he became employed full-time with Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation in Savannah, GA, earning a substantial salary of $65,000 per year as an Aviation Technician Inspector.
Ashan’s journey proves that regardless of someone’s circumstances, CareerSource Pinellas is here to help and provide assistance to take each person to the next level in his or her career.
Networking New Opportunities: Jacqueline Johnson-Boyd
Jacqueline Johnson-Boyd was unexpectedly let go from a company that she had worked at for 29 years. That being said, she was in a very low place and didn’t know what to do to be able to make herself marketable to today’s employers and comfortable with the job searching process.
Luckily, she had discovered CareerSource Pinellas and was amazed at all the programs available that could help her turn her career path around. One of the most helpful programs for Jacqueline was PTT, a networking group for business professionals just like her. The workshops she attended were phenomenal, and Jacqueline especially appreciated the attentive staff members who reviewed her resume. The networking group gave Jacqueline the confidence she needed to enhance her elevator pitch and market herself successfully to local employers.
Jacqueline applied everything she had learned at PTT and was picked up by a great company. Now, she is making a difference, learning more skills and growing with her new company each and every day. Congratulations, Jacqueline!
